What is a Social Co-Op?
Good information isn't free, but it shouldn't be paywalled either. And it definitely shouldn't be the product. You shouldn't be the product. Tribes is a social network built on a different idea: what if the people using the platform actually owned it?
Tribes is a member cooperative. That means we don't have VC investors extracting value, we don't sell your data, and we don't run ads. Paid memberships fund the platform and every member gets a vote in how we build it. Like a credit union, but for your social life.
How is Tribes different?
We designed Tribes to work more like the real world does:
- Your journal is private. Personal posts are encrypted end-to-end. Only you can read them. Not us, not our servers, not anyone. They're yours.
- Your bonds are encrypted. When you connect with someone on Tribes, your conversations are protected by strong encryption that only you and your bond can unlock.
- Private tribes stay private. Group communities can be fully encrypted. The tribe founder holds the key and controls who gets access.
- Public spaces are public. Not everything needs to be locked down. Public tribes are open forums for open discourse, and content can be promoted from private to public when you're ready to share more broadly.
The point isn't to hide everything. It's to give you the choice. Start private, go public when you're ready. That's how real conversations work.
Why a Co-Op?
The current internet has a trust problem, and it didn't happen by accident. Platforms optimized for engagement over truth, monetized your attention, and flooded feeds with bots and rage-bait. The result is a place where strangers can barely have a civil conversation anymore.
We think the fix is structural, not cosmetic. If the people who use the platform own it, the incentives change. No one is optimizing for "time on site" or "ad impressions." We're optimizing for the community we actually want to be part of.
We're also reinvesting profits directly back into members. Honestly, at this stage it's costing me out of pocket. That's fine. We're building trust, and trust takes time.
Membership Tiers
- Free (always): Read, post, and contribute to any public tribe. No paywalls on participation.
- Individual Membership: Full members can create tribes, join the co-op ownership pool, and vote on the roadmap.
- Organization Memberships (coming soon): For orgs that need to manage larger communities, with perks like bond-only events, exclusive content, and personalized ways to connect with your members.
Paid memberships also serve a practical purpose: they mean only people who care enough to invest in the platform are creating and managing communities. That alone filters out most bots and bad actors.
Root Founders: The First 500
We're looking for our first 500 members. Not 500 signups from a growth hack or a viral tweet. 500 real people who care about building something better.
If you're reading this, you're early. The first 500 members are our Root Founders. Your membership never expires, you'll have a permanent voice in how this platform evolves, and your name is part of the foundation we're building on. You can track our progress right here on this tribe. When we hit 500, we'll close this chapter and open the next one together.
To everyone who's already here, whether you're a stranger who stumbled in or family who showed up because I asked: thank you. Every early member is an act of faith, and we don't take that lightly.
Growing the Right Way
We're not interested in growth hacking our way to a million users. We want people who actually want to be here. That means:
- No fake accounts, no bots, no buying followers
- No dark patterns to trick people into signing up
- Real people inviting real people because the platform is worth sharing
If Tribes grows, it'll be because people told their friends it was worth their time. That's the only growth engine we want.
Make It Yours
This isn't a platform where you wait for content to appear. We need you to make it.
Post in public tribes. Share what you're thinking about, what you're working on, what you care about. Original content is the lifeblood of any community. The public tribes are yours to fill. Write something, start a discussion, share a link, post a picture. It doesn't need to be polished. It needs to be real.
Create a private tribe. Got a friend group, a team, a book club, a project, a family chat that deserves better than a group text? Create a private tribe. It's end-to-end encrypted, you control who gets in, and it's yours to run however you want. You don't need permission from us to build your own space. That's the whole point.
We'll be publishing a follow-up guide on how to create your first tribe, set up moderation, and invite your people. But honestly, just hit the "Create Tribe" button and start. You'll figure it out.
